Immigration remained a major political and economic topic throughout May 2026, with continuing discussion around proposed reforms to settlement rules and the future direction of UK immigration policy.

Recent government proposals concerning “earned settlement” and potential longer pathways to indefinite leave to remain (ILR) have created uncertainty for many migrants and employers. Although reforms have been discussed extensively, the proposed changes have not yet come into force as of May 2026.

At the same time, new figures released by the Office for National Statistics showed a significant reduction in UK net migration levels following tighter immigration measures introduced over the last two years.

The continuing changes to salary thresholds, sponsorship requirements and overseas recruitment rules are having a noticeable impact on sectors such as healthcare, hospitality and construction, with many businesses reporting ongoing recruitment challenges.

Employers and migrants should continue to monitor developments carefully, particularly in relation to sponsor compliance, settlement eligibility and future Immigration Rule changes expected later in 2026.
